India initiated cricket attacks

The Pakistani Crime Investigation Department (CID) had warned the Punjab government on January 22, 2009 of an Indian plan to attack the Sri Lankan Cricket team during their visit to Pakistan.  But the warning fell on deaf ears.

“The CID, while referring to a source report, said this terrorist attack would be carried out by the infamous RAW, especially while the Sri Lankan team would be travelling “between the hotel and stadium or at hotel during their stay.”

“The report tagged “SCRET/IMMEDIATE” with subject “SOURCE REPORT” reads: “It has reliably been learnt that RAW (Indian intelligence agency) has assigned its agents the task to target Sri Lankan cricket team during its current visit to Lahore, especially while travelling between the hotel and stadium or at hotel during their stay.

2. It is evident that RAW intends to show Pakistan a security risk state for sports events, particularly when the European and the Indian teams have already postponed their proposed visits considering it a high security risk to visit Pakistan.

3. RAW has also collected photographs of leaders of Jamaatud Daawa (proscribed) and its establishments to target them.

4. Extreme vigilance and heightened security arrangements indicated.

The above report was sent to Syed Kamal Shah, interior secretary, Government of Pakistan, Islamabad, Javed Mehmud, Chief Secretary, Punjab, Lahore, Dr Syed Tauqir Shah, Secretary to Chief Minister, Punjab, Lahore, and Nadeem Hassan Asif, Home Secretary, Government of Punjab, Lahore, on Jan 22 with the covering letter of Additional IGP, CID, Punjab, Lahore, Malik Muhammad Iqbal.”

Given their recent track record RAW doesn’t particularly seem like the most covert / subtle Intelligence service in the world. With a name like Research and Analysis Wing you know they’re going to have trouble hiding the obvious from scrutiny. Plus India is crazy about cricket… you never know what they’ll do to get a head.

I think Pakistan should take help from the agencies like FBI & AFP to solve the terrorism cases. It’s not a rocket science to trace the tracks through forensic evidence. People should rely more on the evidence rather than guessing things.

Pak agencies are too busy with this kind of rhetoric when something happens like this. They put too little effort to solve the actual problem.

Hi Murty, thanks for your comment - The more people start to focus on the solutions rather than the problems the better.

Well fortunately, or unfortunatley, which ever way you look at it, Robert Mueller the FBI Chief just so happened to be in the region around the time of the attack (officially arrived in India on March 4).

Australian Foreign Minister, Steven Smith has Also offered the forensic assistance of the AFP.

“Mr Smith said the economic and security challenges faced by nuclear-armed Pakistan are severe, and he said the country needed the assistance of the international community.

He said he spoke to his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi late last night and offered the assistance of Australian Federal Police (AFP) to help with forensic investigation.” - ABC Online, March 4.

There are a lot of elements who wish to further destabilise Pakistan, its just a matter of time now until we see some big changes take place.

Cheers,

R.
